Basketball Recap: Edgewood Takes Loss Despite Strong Performances from Carmen Smith and Preslee Burton

Edgewood lost against Quitman back in December of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Edgewood Bulldogs fell 44-33 to the Quitman Bulldogs. While losing is never fun, Edgewood can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 857th, while Quitman is ranked 289th).

Despite the loss, Edgewood had strong showings from Preslee Burton, who posted four points along with ten rebounds and three steals, and Carmen Smith, who earned seven points and seven boards.

Even though they lost, Edgewood smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in four consecutive matchups.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Quitman to victory, but perhaps none more so than Kaylin Sapp, who scored 13 points and five steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Sadie Vander Schaaf, who put up 13 points.

Edgewood's record now sits at 8-19. As for Quitman, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine contests, which provided a nice bump to their 20-8 record this season.

Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Malakoff the next time they take the court. Quitman will host Malakoff at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, while Edgewood will head out to face them at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
