Baseball Recap: Gilbert Wins Going Away Against Campo Verde

Gilbert barely beat Campo Verde the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. Gilbert put the hurt on Campo Verde with a sharp 19-5 win on Monday. That looming 19-5 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Tigers yet this season.

Brady Carlin was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. Carlin was even better at the plate, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. That home run was his first of the season.

In other batting news, Gilbert got a massive performance out of Grant Goodman, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in all six of his plate appearances. What's more, Goodman posted three hits, the most he's had since back in February of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Hayden Leach, who went 3-for-5 with three runs, four RBI, and two doubles.

Gilbert kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4.8 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 contests they've averaged 10.

The victory (which was Gilbert's third in a row) raised their record to 4-9. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.7 runs over those games. As for Campo Verde, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-5 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. A feisty cat fight will be fought as Gilbert Tigers face off against Desert Ridge Jaguars at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Gilbert is facing Desert Ridge at the right time seeing as Desert Ridge is stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Campo Verde, they will head out on the road to square off against Arizona College Prep at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Campo Verde's pitchers better be ready for this one: Arizona College Prep has averaged an impressive 10.2 runs per game this season.
