League recap: Bessemer City scores huge upset over Cherryville

1A Conference 3 recap September 4, 2013

The biggest upset of the week belonged to Cherryville, who took down 360th ranked Cherryville, 26-20. Cedric Mackey ran for 179 yards in the win.

Bessemer City was the team made the biggest jump in the rankings, moving from sixth to third in 1A Conference 3. The Yellowjackets defeated the Ironmen 26-20 earlier in the week.

Thomas Jefferson Academy's dynamic duo of Mason Martin and Efrim Borders proved tough for Rosman to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Martin threw for 107 yards and Borders had 63 yards receiving. Tyler Mitchell helped Thomas Jefferson Academy's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 31 yards.

The Gryphons' dynamic duo of Martin and Borders proved to be unstoppable against the Tigers, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week.

Martin put up the best numbers through the air as Thomas Jefferson Academy beat Rosman.

Mackey was the best running back in the league this week. Teammate Tyler Bess added to the ground attack by rushing for 47 yards.

Borders was the best receiver in the league this week as Jerry Cash's team topped Freddie Whitman's team.

Mackey was a passing and rushing force as Bessemer City bested Cherryville.

The Gryphons' Martin and Borders have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 1A Conference 3 in both passing and receiving yards. Martin has thrown for 251 yards this season, while Borders, a 6-foot-0 receiver, has 7 catches for 153 yards. Mackey from Larry Boone's team leads the league in rushing with 256 yards.

Thomas Jefferson Academy scaled the state rankings by moving to 279 from 333 this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Gryphons were able to make move up by topping the Tigers 21-13.
