Basketball Recap: Gabriel Trujillo's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Ponderosa over Woodcreek

Ponderosa was the 74-68 winner over Woodcreek when they last played one another back in December of 2021, but their luck changed this time around. The Ponderosa Bruins took a 53-39 bruising from the Woodcreek Timberwolves on Friday. While losing is never fun, the Bruins can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 805th, while the Timberwolves are ranked 31st).

Several Bruins players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Gabriel Trujillo, who posted nine points. The team also got some help courtesy of Travis Bays, who scored five points and three steals.

Max VanLaningham was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds for Woodcreek. Another player making a difference was Michael Kirby, Jr., who put up five points.

Ponderosa dropped their record down to 4-11 with the loss, which was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season. As for Woodcreek, their win bumped their record up to 13-2.

Ponderosa didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, an 84-71 defeat against Fortune Early College on the 4th. As for Woodcreek, they will challenge Rio Americano at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Woodcreek is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 61.2 points per game this season.
