Baseball Recap: Spring Takes a Loss

Spring extended their losing streak to four on Wednesday, dropping them down to 12-13. They took a 5-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Dekaney Wildcats. That's two games in a row now that the Lions have lost by exactly four runs.

As for Dekaney, the win was the seventh in a row for them, bringing their record up to 14-10-2. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games.

For Dekaney's part, Michael Hayes made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits over five innings pitched. Hayes has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. He has become a key player for Dekaney: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 8-10-2 otherwise.

In other batting news, Damien Torres was excellent, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. He is becoming a predictor of Dekaney's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 6-10-2 when he doesn't).

Spring has already played their next game, a 4-2 defeat against Huntsville on the 11th. As for Dekaney, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next contest, a 5-3 win against MacArthur on the 14th.
