Softball Recap: Vermilion Takes a Loss

Vermilion extended their losing streak to seven on Thursday, dropping them down to 1-8. They took a 12-9 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Port Clinton Redskins. Even though they lost, the Sailors' still made a splash at the plate and bumped their average scoring up to 6.2 runs per game (they're now ranked -1th in scoring overall).

Lilly Porter made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Avery Jonovich, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.

As for Port Clinton, their victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-5. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.3 runs over those games.

On Port Clinton's side, Marissa Frohne spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered six earned (and three unearned) runs on six hits and racked up 12 Ks. Frohne has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than nine strikeouts in six consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Port Clinton got a massive performance out of Jae Mazur, who got on base in four of her six plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. Bella Belden also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

Vermilion has already played their next game, a 7-2 defeat against Avon Lake on the 17th. As for Port Clinton, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next matchup, a 5-4 loss against Edison on the 20th.
