Basketball Game Preview: Sandia Matadors vs. Capital Jaguars

The Sandia Matadors will venture away from home to challenge the Capital Jaguars at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. One thing working in Sandia's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points every time they've taken the court this season.

Sandia is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of New Mexico's top teams: La Cueva, who was ranked tenth at the time (Sandia was ranked third). Sandia skirted past La Cueva 67-64. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Matadors have posted since December 27, 2024.

Meanwhile, Capital was just a bucket shy of victory on Friday and fell 59-58 to Santa Fe. The loss continues a trend for the Jaguars in their matchups with the Demons: they've now lost four in a row.

Sandia is on a roll lately: they've won 14 of their last 16 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 19-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 78.1 points over those games. As for Capital, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-14.

Everything came up roses for Sandia against Capital in their previous matchup back in January, as the squad secured a 101-50 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Sandia since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
