Softball Recap: Wyoming Comes Up Short

Wyoming extended their losing streak to six on Saturday, dropping their season record down to 5-15 in the process. They lost 10-0 to the Zeeland West Dux. The Wolves were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Dux apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

As for Zeeland West, the victory (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 10-7. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.4 runs on average over those games.

For Zeeland West's part, Sadie Kragt made a splash no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. Kragt has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and one double. That double marked the first that she has hit this season.

In other batting news, Zeeland West got a massive performance out of Maddi Veersma, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. Those two stolen bases gave Veersma a new career-high. Bri Kamer was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.

Coming up, Wyoming will square off against West Catholic at 4:15 p.m. on Monday. As for Zeeland West, they will challenge Calvin Christian at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Squires have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.5 runs per game on average), something the Dux will no doubt try to take advantage of.
