The George Washington Patriots will face off against the Westminster Wolves at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
George Washington is looking to give their home crowd another W after opening their season at home on Saturday. They came out on top against Denver South by a score of 7-4.
Luke Wiederholt and Diego Varela were a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Wiederholt pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Varela struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. Those zero hits allowed gave Wiederholt a new career-low. At the plate, Wiederholt scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3, while Varela scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-4.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Henry Kuntner, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one home run. Jonah Rascoff was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, Westminster never let their opponents score on Thursday. They put the hurt on Hinkley with a sharp 28-0 victory.
Like George Washington, Westminster also got a great game from a two-way player: Robert Atencio. He struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Atencio was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.
In other batting news, Westminster let Michael Davidson and Diego Yanos run wild. Davidson went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three stolen bases, and three runs, while Yanos scored four runs and stole Four bases. while going 4-for-4. The dominant performance gave Yanos a new career-high in runs. Another player making a difference was Adrian Moreno, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple.
Westminster always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .816. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Hinkley only posted an OBP of .000.
George Washington took their win against Westminster when the teams last played back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 10-1. Will George Washington repeat their success, or does Westminster have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
