Basketball Recap: South Effingham Comes Up Short

South Effingham lost against Statesboro on January 7th and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The South Effingham Mustangs received a blow as they fell 64-50 to the Statesboro Blue Devils. While losing is never fun, the Mustangs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 385th, while the Blue Devils are ranked 67th).

Despite the loss, South Effingham still got an impressive performance from Will Harlin, who almost dropped a double-double on 16 points and nine rebounds. The matchup was Harlin's third in a row with at least ten points. Michael Hall was another key player, putting up ten points.

Muhammad Shareef went supernova for Statesboro, dropping a double-double on 25 points and 11 boards. Those 25 points gave Shareef a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Ja'Caiden Cone, who went 7 of 16 on his way to 17 points in addition to seven rebounds and three steals.

South Effingham's record is now 7-12. As for Statesboro, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 17-2.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. South Effingham will challenge Bradwell Institute at 8:00 p.m. on Friday. South Effingham is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 62.6 points per game this season. Statesboro has already played their next game (against Swainsboro), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
