Football Game Preview: Americas Trail Blazers vs. Monterey Plainsmen

Two dominant backs in Camron Johnson and Darron Moore are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Americas Trail Blazers will look to defend their home field on Friday against the Monterey Plainsmen at 7:00 p.m. One thing working in Americas' favor is that they have posted at least 31 points in their last four games.

Americas is headed into the contest after thoroughly thrashing Bel Air: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Trail Blazers blew the Highlanders out of the water with a 55-14 final score. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Trail Blazers' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 289th, while the Highlanders are ranked 849th).

Joaquin Hernandez went supernova, rushing for 103 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only seven carries. That's the most rushing yards he has posted since back in August. Cristian Trejo did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 81 receiving yards.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Americas was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 333 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 204 rushing yards in three consecutive matchups.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Monterey, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Friday. They snuck past Caprock with a 34-28 win on Thursday. The Plainsmen haven't had any issues with the Longhorns recently, as the game was their third consecutive victory against them.

Monterey didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Jordan Evans and Terance King.

The win got Monterey back to even at 5-5. As for Americas, their record is now 6-4.

Americas was able to grind out a solid victory over Monterey in their previous meeting back in November of 2015, winning 35-28. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was the Plainsmen's Baylor Mitchell, who rushed for 78 yards and one TD, and also threw for 198 yards and one touchdown. Now that he won't be playing on Friday, will it be easier for the Trail Blazers to walk away with another win? There's only one way to find out.
