Football Recap: Maclay Gets Big Win over Higher-Ranked Chambers Academy

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Taylor County, Maclay was happy to have turned things around on Friday. They walked away with a 38-28 win over the Chambers Academy Rebels. The victory was all the more spectacular given the Marauders' disadvantage in MaxPreps' football rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 263rd in Florida, while the Rebels are ranked 106th in Alabama).

It was another big night for Beau Beshears, who threw for 276 yards and two TDs while completing 71.4% of his passes, and also punched in a pair of touchdowns on the ground. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in passer rating (145.4). Maclay's leading receiver Henry Richardson was Beshears' top target yet again, picking up 127 receiving yards and one score.

Maclay didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off four passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Richardson and Jace Wright. With that strong performance, Wright is now averaging an impressive 5.1 total tackles per game. Maclay received some extra help from Tucker Poppell, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.

Maclay's win bumped their record up to 6-1. As for Chambers Academy, their defeat ended an eight-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 6-2.

Coming up, Maclay will head out on the road to face off against North Florida Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Chambers Academy, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against Morgan Academy at 7:00 p.m.
