Volleyball Recap: Big Valley Christian's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Tuesday

If Big Valley Christian was feeling good fresh off their 3-0 takedown of Gregori on Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Lions fell just short of the River Islands Riptide by a score of 3-2 on Tuesday. The Lions' defeat signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.

Big Valley Christian actually scored more points across those five sets (107-100), but sadly they still had to settle for second. The match finished with set scores of 25-22, 25-20, 16-25, 17-25, 17-15.

Despite the loss, Big Valley Christian saw an underclassman step up: freshman Caitlin Echegoyen had 21 digs and three assists. Echegoyen has been hot recently, having posted 16 or more digs the last four times she's played. Ella Alavezos also deserves some recognition as she had her first block of the season.

River Islands' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Isabella Carrillo led the charge by getting 13 digs and one assist. That's the most digs Carrillo has posted over her last three matchups.

Big Valley Christian's defeat dropped their record down to 14-5. As for River Islands, they pushed their record up to 13-2 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home.

Looking ahead, Big Valley Christian will face off against Bret Harte at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The game will give the Lions their first taste of in-conference action this season. River Islands has already played their next contest (against Kimball), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
