Preview: Woods Cross Wildcats vs. Kearns Cougars
The Woods Cross Wildcats will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against the Kearns Cougars at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. Woods Cross comes in still looking for their first win of the season.
Woods Cross' 18-5 record from last season is now well into the rear view mirror after another tough outing. They suffered a rough 76-53 defeat at the hands of Ridgeline on Wednesday. While losing is never fun, Woods Cross can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Utah basketball rankings (they are ranked 98th, while Ridgeline is ranked 22nd).
Woods Cross' loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Hunter Jackson, who scored 18 points along with eight rebounds, and Ben Smith-mecham who scored nine points along with seven rebounds. The contest was Jackson's sixth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Hayden Poulton, who scored seven points.
Meanwhile, Kearns' recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their third straight loss. They took a 61-49 hit to the loss column at the hands of Murray.
Woods Cross' loss was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 0-8. As for Kearns, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-7.
Woods Cross came up short against Kearns in their previous meeting back in February of 2015, falling 83-79. Can Woods Cross avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
