Preview: Mount Miguel Matadors vs. Monte Vista Monarchs
The Mount Miguel Matadors will be staying on the road on Friday to face off against the Monte Vista Monarchs at 7:00 p.m. on January 26th. Mount Miguel has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
Mount Miguel put the finishing touches on their tenth blowout victory of the season on Tuesday. They claimed a resounding 67-39 win over El Cajon Valley on the road. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest victory Mount Miguel has posted since November 30, 2023.
It was another big night for Mekhi Sydney, who scored 17 points along with six steals and five rebounds. He also posted two+ blocks for the first time this season. Another player making a difference was Vincent Jones, who scored 16 points along with two steals.
Meanwhile, Monte Vista came tearing into Tuesday's contest with eight straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 32.6 points) and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against El Capitan by a score of 69-61. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Mount Miguel's win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 15-7. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 62.0 points per game. As for Monte Vista, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 13 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 16-7 record this season.
Mount Miguel suffered a grim 59-35 defeat to Monte Vista in their previous meeting two weeks ago. Can Mount Miguel avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
