Baseball Recap: Montwood Find Success

Montwood took a nine-run defeat the last time they faced off against Franklin, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Montwood Rams narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Franklin Cougars 5-4. This was a revenge game for the Rams: when they faced off against the Cougars last Saturday, they had to take a 11-2 loss.

Diego Erives made a big impact no matter where he played. He struck out nine batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. He is becoming a predictor of Montwood's success: when he allows at most three earned runs the team is undefeated (and 4-8-2 when he doesn't). Erives was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

In other batting news, Angel Gomez was excellent, scoring two runs while going 2-for-2. That's the most hits he has posted over his last six games.

Montwood's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-8-2. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of one runs across that stretch. As for Franklin, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-9-1 record this season.

Montwood and Franklin could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings. Montwood (ranked 433rd) will meet Pebble Hills (ranked 122nd) at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Franklin will square off against Eastwood at 6:30 p.m. on Friday down 564 places (691 vs. 127).
