Basketball Recap: Harnett Central Comes Up Short

Harnett Central played a tough game on Monday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They came up short against the Clayton Comets, falling 63-39. The defeat continues a trend for the Trojans in their meetings with the Comets: they've now lost three in a row.

Despite the loss, Harnett Central saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Southerlynn Nickerson shot 55% from the field en route to 14 points. Nickerson also set a new season-high mark in three-point shooting accuracy with 50%. Another player making a difference was Nylah Cummings, who posted six points along with ten assists and seven rebounds.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Clayton to victory, but perhaps none more so than Nakhia Rowland, who dropped a double-double with 17 points and 12 boards. Thanks to that strong game, Rowland now owns an excellent 50% field goal percentage. Christa Green was another key player, going 6-for-12 to rack up 14 points in addition to eight rebounds and five assists.

Harnett Central now has a losing record of 2-3. As for Clayton, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 3-1.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Harnett Central will welcome Gray's Creek at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Clayton, they won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Fike at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
