Softball Game Preview: Alleghany Cougars vs. Floyd County Buffaloes

The Alleghany Cougars will square off against the Floyd County Buffaloes at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Alleghany's pitching crew has only allowed 3.1 runs per game this season, so Floyd County's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

The home team had come away the winner the last seven times Alleghany and Glenvar had met, but sadly for the fans who attended this one that wasn't the case. The Cougars had just enough and edged out the Highlanders 3-1.

Meanwhile, Floyd County started off well but failed to capitalize on an early lead against Alleghany. They fell just short of the Cougars by a score of 6-5 on Thursday. Buffaloes fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Cougars since on Thursday.

Emma Biesterveld spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and three unearned) runs on eight hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Lilly Gillispie was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run and three RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Ava DeJesus, who went 1-for-4 with two runs.

Alleghany's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-4. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Floyd County, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 11-6 record this season.

Alleghany skirted past Floyd County 6-5 when the teams last played on Thursday. Do the Cougars have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Buffaloes turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
