Baseball Recap: University Prep Extends Winning Streak to Three

Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only University Prep walked away with it. They walked away with a 9-4 victory over the Bolsa Grande Matadors on Friday. Nine seems to be a good number for the Jaguars as the team scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.

Ricky Gonzalez made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits (and only one walk). He has become a key player for University Prep: the team is undefeated when he posts at least eight strikeouts, but 8-9 otherwise. Gonzalez was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one double. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Angel Herrera, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. He is becoming a predictor of University Prep's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 4-9 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Adriel Salazar, who went 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.

The victory (which was University Prep's third in a row) raised their record to 12-9. As for Bolsa Grande, their defeat ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 15-7.

Coming up, University Prep will challenge Colton at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The Yellowjackets' pitching crew has only allowed four runs per game this season, so the Jaguars' hitters will have their work cut out for them. Bolsa Grande does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
