Recap: Hay Springs Hawks vs. Gordon-Rushville Mustangs

The Hay Springs Hawks have been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They fell just short of Gordon-Rushville by a score of 40-37. Hay Springs lost against Gordon-Rushville in their previous head to head back in January of 2023, too, but the margin this time around was much wider than the 53-42 score last time.

Despite the loss, Hay Springs saw an underclassman step up: Mya Turman dropped a double-double on 18 points and 13 rebounds. The contest was Turman's fifth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Gabby Twarling, who scored 12 points along with six rebounds.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Gordon-Rushville to victory, but perhaps none more so than Haley Johnson, who scored 16 points along with six rebounds and five steals. That makes it nine consecutive games in which Johnson has scored at least 25% of Gordon-Rushville's points. Another player making a difference was Taylor Trinity, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Hay Springs' loss dropped their record down to 9-4. As for Gordon-Rushville, they pushed their record up to 9-3 with that victory, which was their 11th straight at home dating back to last season.

Hay Springs will be staying on the road on Thursday to face off against Cody-Kilgore on January 11th. Cody-Kilgore will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Nebraska Rankings (they are ranked 240th, while Hay Springs is ranked 109th). As for Gordon-Rushville, they will look to defend their home court on Friday against Gering at 3:30 p.m.
