Softball Game Preview: Veterans Memorial Chargers vs. San Benito Greyhounds

The Veterans Memorial Chargers will head out to challenge the San Benito Greyhounds at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.

Veterans Memorial made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Los Fresnos, but they still couldn't quite topple them. Veterans Memorial's pitcher stepped up to hand Los Fresnos a 15-0 shutout on Tuesday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Chargers.

Arianna Garcia made a splash no matter where she played. She pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. That's the fewest hits she has allowed since back in February. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-2.

In other batting news, Veterans Memorial got a massive performance out of Miranda Lerma, who scored two runs while going 2-for-2. The dominant performance also gave Lerma a new career-high in doubles (two). Itzel Rodriguez was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two triples, two RBI, and one run.

Veterans Memorial was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .769. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .333 or higher in five consecutive matches.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask San Benito). Everything went their way against Los Fresnos on Friday as San Benito made off with a 21-2 win. The Greyhounds haven't had any issues with the Falcons recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive victory against them.

Veterans Memorial's record now sits at 9-12. As for San Benito, they picked up their first road win, bumping their record up to 11-8-1.

Veterans Memorial couldn't quite get it done against San Benito in their previous meeting back in March of 2018 as they fell 4-1. Can Veterans Memorial avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
