Baseball Recap: Merritt Academy Sets Scoring Season-High Against Landmark Academy

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Merritt Academy). They blew past Landmark Academy 18-3 on Wednesday. With that victory, the Mustangs brought their scoring average up to 7.1 runs per game.

Blake Madaus and Joey Bartrum made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Madaus tossed 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Bartrum tossed 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Madaus has become a key player for Merritt Academy: the team is 3-1 when he allows at most three hits, but 2-3 otherwise. At bat, Madaus went 2-for-3 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run, while Bartrum went a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs and one stolen base. That stolen base marked the first that Bartrum has snagged this season.

In other batting news, Merritt Academy got a massive performance out of Jackson Dupuis, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and one double. Dupuis is becoming a predictor of the Mustangs' success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is undefeated (and 2-4 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Matthew Herd III, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and two doubles.

Merritt Academy always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .727. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Merritt Academy's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 5-4. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.3 runs over those games. As for Landmark Academy, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 0-2.

Looking ahead, Merritt Academy will challenge Capac at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Landmark Academy, they will face off against More Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
