The Westview Wolverines will face off against the Green Valley Gators at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Westview is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
Westview is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering Escondido just ended the team's five-game winning streak on Thursday. They fell just short of the Cougars by a score of 4-3.
Charles Jaskowiak put in work no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits (and only one walk). What's more, he gave up only one walk, the fewest he's had since back in May of 2024. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Jaskowiak wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Mahir Desai, who scored a run while going 1-for-2. Desai also hit a double, marking his first of the season.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Green Valley, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Wednesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-6 win over Rancho on Friday. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Like Westview, Green Valley also got a great game from a two-way player: Jet McNelis. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. McNelis has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and one RBI. Green Valley is undefeated when McNelis posts two or more runs, but 5-7 otherwise.
In other pitching news, Grant Morris tossed a big game, pitching five innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, Isaiah Alba was excellent, scoring a run while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Maddix Kaye, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.
Westview's loss dropped their record down to 6-3. As for Green Valley, their victory bumped their record up to 10-7.
Green Valley's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Monday. Westview has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.6 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Green Valley, though, as they've been averaging an even more impressive 4.1 strikeouts. Will Westview keep running through batters, or will Green Valley buck the trend?
Westview couldn't quite finish off Green Valley in their previous meeting back in April of 2022 and fell 3-1. Can Westview avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
