Basketball Recap: Wheatley Comes Up Short

Despite a phenomenal run in the regular season, Wheatley couldn't carry that success into this playoff game. They fell 44-32 to the Bridge City Cardinals on Friday. The matchup marked the Wildcats' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Despite the loss, Wheatley saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Symone Johnson posted eight points in addition to seven rebounds and three steals.

Even though they lost, Wheatley smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 37 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Whitney Cunningham was the offensive standout of the contest as she put up ten points along with five boards and four steals. What's more, she also posted a 75% field goal percentage, which is the highest she's achieved since back in December of 2024. Mia Sterling was another key player, putting up seven points and eight rebounds.

Wheatley's defeat dropped their record down to 23-3. As for Bridge City, the win was the ninth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 33-3.

Wheatley does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Bridge City, a feisty cat fight will be fought as the Cardinals duke it out with the Cougars at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Jarrell will roll in looking for their ninth straight victory, something Bridge City surely won't give up without a fight.
