Softball Recap: Springfield Snaps 11-Game Streak of Wins on the Road

Springfield fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Woodridge on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Bulldogs by a score of 8-7. The Spartans were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bulldogs apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

Joey Klein spent all 8.2 innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and three unearned) runs on 11 hits and racked up 11 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Bre Ruggiero made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-5 with two triples and three runs. Melaena Martin also deserves some recognition as she launched her first home run of the season.

Springfield's defeat ended an 11-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 5-4. As for Woodridge, their win was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 3-5.

Looking ahead, Springfield will challenge Norton at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Spartans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Panthers have averaged an impressive 6.8 runs per game this season. As for Woodridge, they will face off against Cloverleaf at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Colts have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 11.86 runs per game on average), something the Bulldogs will no doubt try to take advantage of.
