Basketball Recap: Brayden Myovela Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat South

Maize won the last time they faced South and things went their way on Tuesday too. The Maize Eagles came out on top against the South Cougars by a score of 56-43. Given the Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 94th, while the Cougars are ranked 201st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Maize's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Brayden Myovela led the charge by almost dropping a double-double on nine points and ten boards. Alec Grill was another key player, putting up 12 points in addition to five assists and four steals.

Maize was working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as South only racked up nine assists.

When it comes to explaining why South lost, don't look at Gavin Devoe. Despite the final result, he went 7 of 12 on his way to 16 points and five rebounds. The dominant performance gave Devoe a new career-high in points.

Maize has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season. As for South, they have also been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-5 record this season.

Maize will face off against Valley Center at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Valley Center knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past four games -- so hopefully Maize likes a good challenge. As for South, they will take on Maize South at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. South is facing Maize South at the right time seeing as Maize South is stuck on a five-game losing streak.
