Laney and Hoggard are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2021, but likely not for long. The Buccaneers will welcome the Vikings at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Laney will be looking to extend their current eight-game winning streak.
Laney had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the ten-run drubbing they dealt Ashley last Thursday. The Buccaneers never let the Screaming Eagle get on the board and left with a 10-0 victory. Considering the Buccaneers have won ten matches by more than seven runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Bailey Bettencourt was a standout: she got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run, three RBI, and one double. Another player making a difference was Layla Carr, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with four stolen bases and three runs.
Laney always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .545. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Ashley only posted an OBP of .000.
Meanwhile, Hoggard has relied on a stalwart pitchers averaging 3.5 runs allowed per game, but that average took a hit on Monday. They lost 12-4 to Cape Fear. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Vikings have suffered since March 4th.
Hoggard saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Alyssa Norris, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run. Sophie Gee was another, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one run.
Laney's win was their seventh straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 12-2. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Hoggard, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-7 record this season.
Hoggard's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Laney hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .353. It's a different story for Hoggard, though, as they've only averaged .236. Will they be able to contain Laney's hitters?
Laney beat Hoggard 11-8 in their previous matchup back in March. Will the Buccaneers repeat their success, or do the Vikings have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
