The Jasper Eagles will face off against the Liberal Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Jasper has given up an average of 46.5 points per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Jasper came up short against Drexel/Miami on Friday, falling 48-26. The loss continues a trend for the Eagles in their meetings with Drexel/Miami: they've now lost eight in a row.
Despite the defeat, Jasper saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Colt Clements rushed for 162 yards and two scores while picking up 7.4 yards per carry.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Liberal). They breezed past New Heights Christian Academy to the tune of 60-8 on Friday. Winning may never get old, but the Bulldogs sure are getting used to it with their third in a row.
Jasper better keep an eye on Elam Beaman. He was instrumental in Liberal's win, rushing for 200 yards and three touchdowns on only seven carries, while also throwing for 146 yards and three TDs while completing 80% of his passes. Those 200 rushing yards gave Beaman a new career-high. Cody Suschnick was another key player, picking up 105 receiving yards and a pair of scores.
Liberal was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 313 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 162 rushing yards every time they've taken the field this season.
Jasper's loss dropped their record down to 1-3. As for Liberal, their victory bumped their record up to 3-1.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Jasper has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 205.2 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Liberal struggles in that department as they've been averaging 253.5 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
