Football Recap: Smyrna Takes a Loss

If Smyrna was riding high fresh off their 40-7 takedown of Coffee County Central last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The matchup between the Bulldogs and the Riverdale Warriors didn't end well, with the Bulldogs falling 31-13. The contest was a 10-10 toss-up at halftime, but the Bulldogs couldn't quite close it out.

A big part of Riverdale's win came down to the chemistry between Gavin Hampton and his top target Corben Reynolds. Hampton threw for 254 yards and three touchdowns while completing 72.2% of his passes while Reynolds picked up 123 receiving yards and a pair of scores. Hampton's passing game has become a key predictor of Riverdale's success: the team is undefeated when his passer rating is 110 or higher, but only 1-2 otherwise.

Smyrna's loss dropped their record down to 3-4. As for Riverdale, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 5-2.

Looking ahead, after each having a week off, Smyrna and Blackman will shake off the rust and duke it out on the 17th. The Blaze's defense has only allowed 10.2 points per game this season, so the Bulldogs' offense will have their work cut out for them. As for Riverdale, they will be playing at home against Siegel at 7:00 p.m. on the 17th.
