Softball Game Preview: Goodland Cowboys vs. Holcomb Longhorns

Goodland hasn't had much luck against Holcomb recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Cowboys will venture away from home to square off against the Longhorns at 3:00 p.m. Holcomb took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Goodland, who comes in off a win.

On Thursday, Goodland was able to grind out a solid victory over Russell, taking the game 8-4.

Kaedance Smith spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and three unearned) runs on nine hits.

On the hitting side, Destiny Gonzalez was incredible, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Elly Evert, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one triple.

Holcomb played against Southwestern Heights on Thursday and lost via forfeit.

Goodland is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-10 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.3 runs over those games. As for Holcomb, they are on a 14-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-12.

Goodland came up short against Holcomb in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, falling 5-0. Can the Cowboys avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
