High school basketball: John Marshall, Columbus and Harvard-Westlake highlight look at best state champion in all 50 states

State champions have been crowned in all 50 states and the District of Columbia – we pick the best of the best.

As the 2022-23 high school basketball season concludes next week with the State Champions Invitational, we examined champions from coast to coast in an effort to identify the best team in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Only teams who won state championships this season were considered. The best team in each state was determined by overall body of work, including wins against quality opponents, strength of schedule, postseason results and overall record.

Examing the top team in each state follows the release of our 2022-23 MaxPreps All-America Team earlier in this week and the roll out of our MaxPreps Player of the Year in all 50 states.

Alabama — Hoover
Record: 31-4
Sophomores Salim London (34 points) and Dewayne Brown (24 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks) led the way in the Buccaneers' 84-66 victory over Central in the Class 7A state title game.

Record: 24-5
Sophomore guard Muhammed Sabally tallied a game-high 20 points and seven rebounds in a 53-48 win against West Valley in the Class 4A state title game.

Arizona — Perry (Gilbert)
Record: 30-1
The Pumas cruised past Sunnyslope 74-58 paced by 35 points, six rebounds and four blocks from No. 3-ranked sophomore prospect Koa Peat to claim their second consecutive state title.

Arkansas — Jonesboro
Record: 30-3
Senior forward Devarius Montgomery pumped in a game-high 15 points in the Hurricanes' 48-43 victory over Springdale to capture their third consecutive state championship.

Record: 33-2
Claimed the program's first Open Division state championship with a 76-65 victory over St. Joseph paced by 16 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds from four-star junior Trent Perry.

Record: 26-2
Seniors Jack Greenwood (27 points) and D'Aundre Samuels (25 points, seven rebounds and five assists) led the way in the Angels' 82-61 triumph over Fossil Ridge in the Class 6A state title game.



Record: 27-1
The Eagles overcame an 18-point deficit to defeat Northwest Catholic 49-47 in the Division I state title game. MaxPreps Connecticut Player of the Year James Jones led the way with a game-high 24 points and six assists.

Record: 17-7
Captured the program's third state championship with a 48-44 victory over William Penn in the title game led by 20 points from junior Isaiah Hynson.

District of Columbia — Sidwell Friends
Record: 27-4
Sit at the No. 17 spot in the MaxPreps Top 25 after claiming the Class AA title with a 62-47 victory over Jackson-Reed in the title game. Lehigh-bound Cam Gillus led the way with 20 points.

Florida — Columbus (Miami)
Record: 26-4
Back-to-back Class 7A state champions escaped with a victory over Winter Haven 50-48 paced by a game-high 21 points from sophomore Cayden Boozer. Columbus is ranked No. 9 in the MaxPreps Top 25.

Georgia — Wheeler (Marietta)
Record: 26-6
Won their third state title in the past four seasons with a 78-58 victory over Cherokee in the Class AAAAAAA state title game. Top-ranked senior Isaiah Collier led the way with 22 points and seven assists.

Record: 27-7
MaxPreps Hawaii Player of the Year Pupualii Sepulona led the charge with 15 points in the Crusaders' 41-37 state title game victory over Campbell.

Record: 26-0
Became the first team from Idaho to ever make an appearance in the MaxPreps Top 25, currently sitting at No. 24 in the national rankings after winning their first state title.

Illinois — Metamora
Record: 34-2
Reeled off 32 consecutive wins to end the season after starting the year 2-2. The Redbirds upset Simeon 46-42 in overtime of the state title game behind 20 points form Tyson Swanson.



Record: 33-0
Became the 14th team in the history of the Hoosier State to go unbeaten after taking down Kokomo 53-41 in the Class 4A state title game guided by a game-high 20 points from unsigned senior Zane Doughty.

Record: 26-0
Took home the school's first state title since 1997 with a 58-55 victory over Xavier paced by 19 points from Colby Collison.

Record: 21-4
Dominant Sunflower State program captured its sixth state title since 2013, defeating Heights 55-50 behind 22 points from Grant Stubblefield.

Record: 36-1
A balanced effort led the Dragons to their first state title since 2004 as Omari Glover, Damarion Walkup and Kade Unseld each contributed 17 points in a 64-60 victory over George Rogers Clark in the title game.

Record: 28-6
Pulled off an upset of Scotlandville 57-54 to capture the program's first state title. Connor Green led the way with 14 points and Dennis Hebert added 13 points in the win.

Maine — South Portland
Record: 19-3
Repeated as Class AA state champions with a 52-42 win over Portland behind a game-high 19 points from Ben Smith.

Record: 29-11
Pulled off a major upset of nationally ranked Mount St. Joseph 78-75 to win the Class A independent state championship led by 30 points, seven rebounds and four assists from Maryland signee Janathan Lamothe.

Massachusetts — North (Worcester)
Record: 24-2
MaxPreps Massachusetts Player of the Year Tahlan Pettway scored 22 points to lead the Polar Bears to a 73-64 victory over Needham in the Division I state title game.



Michigan — Cass Tech (Detroit)
Record: 28-1
Brought home the program's first state title with a 78-63 victory over Muskegon in the Division I title game paced by a game-high 19 points from sophomore Darius Acuff and senior Travon Cooper.

Minnesota — Wayzata (Plymouth)
Record: 27-4
Three-star junior Jackson McAndrew led the way with a game-high 25 points and nine rebounds in the Trojans' 75-71 victory over Park Center in the Class 4A state title game.

Mississippi — Yazoo City
Record: 31-5
Won 19 consecutive games en route to a 53-43 win over Raymond in the Class 4A state title game behind 16 points and seven rebounds from junior Damarion Winston.

Record: 30-2
Blew past Kickapoo 49-32 in the Class 6 state title game led by a game-high 16 points from Colorado State pledge Kyan Evans.

Montana — Fergus (Lewistown)
Record: 24-0
MaxPreps Montana Player of the Year Fischer Brown was the catalyst with a game-high 25 points in the Golden Eagles 54-47 victory over Beaverhead County to win the Class A title.

Record: 29-0
Sit at No. 14 in the MaxPreps Top 25 after a dominant season that saw them outscore their opponents by an average of 26.2 points per contest.



Record: 21-6
Won the program's first state title since 1996 with a 57-47 victory over reigning champion Liberty in the state title game. Taj Degourville led the way with 16 points in the win.

New Hampshire — Bedford
Record: 22-1
Senior Aiden O'Connell and Junior Luke Soden scored 23 of their team's 25 fourth quarter points to navigate the Bulldogs to a 66-56 win over Pinkerton in the Division I state title game.

Record: 22-5
Currently sitting at No. 13 in the MaxPreps Top 25 after capturing the North Jersey Non-Public B title with a 68-59 victory over St. Rose. Arizona State signee Akil Watson had a game-high 23 points in the win.

Record: 29-1
Won their second consecutive Class 5A state title with a 43-31 victory over Sandia led by 17 points and 11 rebounds from sophomore Kenyon Aguino.

Record: 22-3
Although the Crusaders were upset in the first round of GEICO Nationals, they claimed their ninth New York Federation state championship with an 81-57 victory over Archbishop Stepinac and sit at No. 3 in the MaxPreps Top 25.

North Carolina — Central Cabarrus (Concord)
Record: 32-0
Climbed to No. 15 in the MaxPreps Top 25 after running the table to capture the Class 3A state title with a 65-51 win over Northwood. Senior Adriel Miller and junior Desmond Kent Jr. each had a game-high 16 points in the triumph.



North Dakota — Central Cass (Casselton)
Record: 26-0
The Squirrels capped off their perfect season with a 61-44 victory over Shiloh Christian in the Class B state title game led by 15 points and 14 rebounds from junior Cole Holzer.

Record: 29-0
A dominant season saw the Spartans win by an average of 35.3 points per contest, including a 70-26 victory over Crestview in the state championship game.

Record: 26-2
Knocked off Broken Arrow 58-49 by winning the second half 30-17 in the Class 6A state title game. Juniors T.O. Barrett scored a game-high 17 points while Dylan Warlick contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Oregon — Tualatin
Record: 25-5
The fourth time was the charm for the Timberwolves, who defeated West Linn 60-47 to repeat as Class 6A state champions after losing to the Lions in their previous three meeting this season.

Record: 30-3
Won their second consecutive Class 5A state title in convincing fashion, defeating Exeter Township 78-40 in the title game behind a game-high 16 points from five-star Kentucky signee Justin Edwards.

Record: 26-4
Won their third consecutive state championship with a 67-61 win over La Salle Academy paced by 15 points from senior Michael Paquette.



South Carolina — Dorman (Roebuck)
Record: 29-2
Took down Goose Creek 58-56 in the Class AAAAA state title game to claim their fifth state title in the past seven years and solidify their spot in the MaxPreps Top 25.

Record: 26-0
MaxPreps North Dakota Player of the Year Isaac Bruns led the way with a game-high 22 points in the Panthers 54-48 win over Sioux Falls Christian in the Class A state title game.

Record: 30-3
Won 19 consecutive games en route to defeating Briarcrest Christian 63-52 in the Division II Class AA state title game. Tournament MVP Tyler Tanner led the way with a game-high 20 points.

Record: 34-3
Top-ranked junior prospect Tre Johnson tallied a game-high 29 points to lead the Wildcats to a 55-44 victory over Beaumont United in the Class 6A state title game.

Record: 25-2
Captured the Class 6A state title with a 66-51 victory over American Fork in the state title game paced by 21 points from senior Max Toombs and 16 points and 11 rebounds from junior Brody Kozlowski.

Record: 22-1
Claimed their first state title in school history by defeating three-time defending state champions Rice Memorial 42-38 in the Division I state title game behind a game-high 19 points from junior Kyle Eaton.



Record: 28-0
No. 1-ranked team in the MaxPreps Top 25 averaged 107 points per contest and outscored opponents by an average of 65.5 points over the course of six postseason contests.

Record: 28-3
MaxPreps Washington Player of the Year Zoom Diallo tallied a game-high 21 points and six rebounds to guide the Vikings to their second consecutive Class 4A state title with a 49-43 win over Olympia.

West Virginia — Morgantown
Record: 26-2
Took home their second consecutive Class AAAA state title with a 65-58 victory over Parkersburg South.

Wisconsin — De Pere
Record: 30-0
Became the 46th team to go unbeaten in the state after defeating Arrowhead 69-49 in the Division I state title game paced by 24 points from senior John Kinziger.

Wyoming — East (Cheyenne)
Record: 26-4
Senior Garet Schlabs scored 13 of his team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter to guide the Thunderbirds to a 68-59 win over Laramie in the Class 4A state title game.
