Basketball Recap: Southaven Falls Despite Big Games from Cameron Hammond and Jayven Welch

Southaven was the 52-50 winner over Horn Lake when they last played one another back in December of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The contest between the Southaven Chargers and the Horn Lake Eagles didn't end well, with the Southaven Chargers falling 65-50. While losing is never fun, the Chargers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi basketball rankings (they are ranked 76th, while the Eagles are ranked 16th).

Jayven Welch and Cameron Hammond certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Welch posted 13 points and three steals, while Hammond put up six points in addition to five rebounds and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Jodari Morgan, who scored seven points and six boards.

This is the second loss in a row for Southaven and nudges their season record down to 10-9. As for Horn Lake, they pushed their record up to 19-4 with the victory, which was their seventh straight on the road.

Southaven will head out to challenge Oxford at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Southaven is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 56.4 points per game this season. Horn Lake has already played their next match, an 86-60 win against North Panola on the 18th.
