Rio Americano upsets Buchanan at Boras Classic

Favored Buchanan shut out by Sacramento-area team; Rocklin ends nation's longest win streak with victory over Foothill.

The Buchanan (Clovis, Calif.) Bears entered the Boras Classic as the favorite to win the northern regional part of the tournament.

The Rio Americano (Sacramento, Calif.) Raiders had other ideas.

The Raiders scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie and defeated the previously undefeated Bears 3-0 in the first round of the Boras Classic.

Guillermo Salazar proved to be the hero for Rio Americano, as he hit a home run to left field with two runners on to break the scoreless tie. He then went to the mound and finished off the Bears in the bottom of the inning to get the complete-game, eight-inning shutout. Salazar gave up five hits and struck out 11 while walking three.



The Raiders then toppled Rocklin (Calif.) 6-1 in the second round to advance to a semifinal matchup with Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove) today.

Josh Savea was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs in the win over Rocklin. Alec Kazanjian went the distance on the mound, striking out eight and walking four while giving up just three hits.

Rocklin advanced to the second round by stopping the team with the longest win streak in the nation. Foothill (Palo Cedro, Calif.) entered the contest with a 30-game win streak, but the Cougars could not stop the Rocklin offensive attack in a 16-6 loss. The Thunder turned a close game into a rout with eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Logan Webb and Sam Curtis each had three hits with Curtis and Taylour Reidt driving in three runs apiece. Austin Dick got the win, striking out eight and walking two.

Buchanan edged Foothill 4-3 in a second-round consolation matchup, scoring a run in the fifth to break a 3-3 tie. Trenton Kemp was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for the Bears while Chase Larsen and Ryan Coleman each homered for Foothill.

In other first-round games, Stockdale (Bakersfield, Calif.) defeated Castro Valley (Calif.) 3-2 and Dougherty Valley (San Ramon, Calif.) beat Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) 6-4. Stockdale then defeated Dougherty Valley 4-3 to advance to the semifinals against Elk Grove.



JC Coles was 2-for-3 and Junior Felix had a double to lead Stockdale against Dougherty Valley. Max Carter outdueled Cody Snider for the win, striking out seven and walking one.

Against Oak Ridge, Bradley Gosiengfiao, JD Clarke and Draco Roberts all had two hits apiece. Logan Marston led Oak Ridge with a double and a triple.

Stockdale defeated Castro Valley with a run in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a walkoff double by James Carroll.

In the only other game, Oak Ridge defeated Castro Valley 9-1. Chris Roppolo and Tanner Ales each had two hits in the win.

In today's consolation action, Pioneer plays Foothill at 10 a.m., Excel Academy meets Castro Valley at 10 a.m., Buchanan takes on Rodriguez at 1 p.m. and Del Oro plays Oak Ridge at 1 p.m.

In the championship bracket, Rocklin and Deer Valley meet at 4 p.m. for the right to play for third place while Yuba City meets Dougherty Valley in the other third-place bracket contest.



Elk Grove plays Stockdale in one semifinal game while Rio Americano plays Pleasant Grove in the other. Both games are at 7 p.m.
