Beverly fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Masconomet Regional on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Chieftains by a score of 11-9. On the bright side, the nine- run effort marked the Panthers' highest-scoring contest to date.

Graham Gavin was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out 11 batters over 4.2 innings while giving up three earned (and five unearned) runs off three hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Charles Salerno was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. Those stolen bases were his first of the season. Micah McMannus was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

Beverly's loss dropped their record down to 5-7. As for Masconomet Regional, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-6 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Beverly will face off against Arlington at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday. As for Masconomet Regional, they will head out to face off against Winthrop at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
