Basketball Game Preview: Morgan Trojans vs. South Summit Wildcats

Two dominant guards in Bracken Saunders and Logan Woolstenhulme are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Morgan Trojans will challenge the South Summit Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Morgan's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points every time they've taken the court this season.

Last Wednesday, Morgan beat Union 74-61. Given the Trojans' advantage in MaxPreps' Utah basketball rankings (they are ranked 19th, while the Cougars are ranked 72nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Morgan's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Saunders, who went 8 of 20 on his way to 26 points in addition to six boards and five assists. Saunders' evening made it seven games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kolton Asay, who went 5 for 12 en route to 13 points and three steals.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask South Summit). They walked away with an 80-69 win over Grantsville on Wednesday. The victory was familiar territory for the Wildcats who have now won six matchups in a row.

Morgan better keep an eye on Woolstenhulme. He was instrumental in South Summit's win, dropping a double-double on 46 points and ten rebounds. That makes it four consecutive games in which Woolstenhulme has scored at least a third of South Summit's points. Blake Osguthorpe was another key player, putting up 12 points and five boards.

Saunders wasn't the only one working in the assists department: South Summit was working as a unit and finished the game with 25 assists. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now posted at least 22 assists in four consecutive contests.

South Summit has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 games, which provided a nice bump to their 13-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 67.9 points per game. As for Morgan, they pushed their record up to 15-1 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home.

Morgan came up short against South Summit in their previous matchup back in February of 2024, falling 61-51. Can Morgan avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
