The Sumner Stingrays will be taking part in a tournament against the Lennard Longhorns at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this matchup.
Sumner saw some tournament action on Saturday. They came up short against Strawberry Crest, falling 17-7. The Stingrays have struggled against the Chargers recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost meetings.
Winston Pennant was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and one double. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Sebastian Peralta, who went 1-for-2 with one home run.
Pennant wasn't the only one working in the home run department: Sumner lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Lennard came up short against Alonso on Saturday and fell 7-3. The Longhorns have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Lennard also got a good showing from Jv Brennick, who pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. Brennick has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Lennard saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mikie Locke, who went 2-for-4 with one double.
Sumner's defeat dropped their record down to 6-6. As for Lennard, their loss dropped their record down to 4-8.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Sumner has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.4 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Lennard struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.4 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Sumner skirted past Lennard 6-5 in their previous meeting back in March of 2024. Will Sumner repeat their success, or does Lennard have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
