Basketball Preview: Covington Chargers vs. Munford Cougars
The Covington Chargers will head out on the road to face off against the Munford Cougars at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The teams are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Covington has struggled recently with five losses in a row, while the Cougars will arrive with nine straight wins.
Covington fought the good fight in their overtime match against the Chiefs on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took a 81-77 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Chiefs. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Meanwhile, it may have taken overtime to finish the job, but Munford ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 82-80 win over Millington Central. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
The match pitted two dominant guards against one another in Murray Norman and Brandon Payne. Norman had a solid game and scored seven points along with nine rebounds. Meanwhile, Payne was balling out in the loss, scoring 27 points along with seven rebounds and five assists.
Covington's loss was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 3-16. That rough patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.5 points per game. As for Munford, their victory bumped their record up to 16-2.
Covington couldn't quite finish off the Cougars in their previous matchup back in February of 2023 and fell 66-64. Can Covington avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
