Football Recap: Wood River Makes It Seven in a Row at Home

Wood River had won seven straight at home dating back to last season, but on Friday they bumped up to 5-1 to make it eight. They snuck past the Fillmore Central Panthers with a 25-20 win. The Eagles' offense checked out after the first half but had enough points banked to take the game anyway.

It was another big night for Madden Brabec, who rushed for 292 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 15.4 yards per carry, and also threw for 114 yards and one TD. His longest rush was for an incredible 70 yards.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Wood River was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 343 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in November of 2024.

As for Fillmore Central, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-4 record this season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 29.0 points over those games.

When it comes to explaining why Fillmore Central lost, don't look at Preston Komenda. Despite the final result, he threw for 219 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and also rushed for 33 yards.

Looking ahead, Wood River will head out to square off against Gibbon at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Eagles will be up against the Buffaloes' rather soft defense (which has allowed 44.83 points per matchup), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Fillmore Central, they will be playing at home against Doniphan-Trumbull at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Cardinals' defense has only allowed 10.2 points per game this season, so the Panthers' offense will have their work cut out for them.
