Basketball Recap: Downey Vikings vs. South El Monte Eagles

Tyler Harris was his usual excellent self, going 12 for 14 en route to 33 points plus five rebounds. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in field goal percentage (86%). Emari Welcome was another key player, scoring eight points plus eight steals and five rebounds.
Downey was working as a unit and finished the game with 22 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
South El Monte's loss came despite strong showings from Eli Lopez and Tony Aguilar. Lopez went 5 for 12 en route to 17 points plus two steals, while Aguilar made all 5 shots he took racking up 12 points. Lopez is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last four games he's played.
Downey now has a winning record of 4-3. As for South El Monte, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-4.
Downey and Loyola will face off at 5:40 p.m. on Wednesday without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Loyola knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past three contests -- so hopefully Downey likes a good challenge. As for South El Monte, they will take on Wilson in a tournament on Thursday.
