California, Florida lead representatives in first round of 2018 NFL Draft

There wasn't a single Florida product taken among the first 16 picks in Thursday's NFL Draft.

That was news considering the state — certainly Southern Florida — is considered the hottest bed of high school football talent.

But over the last 16 selections, six from the Sunshine State were picked, tying it with California for the most high school products picked in the first round.

In a historic draft for quarterbacks, where four of the top 10 were signal-callers, three of those were from California, including No. 10 pick Josh Rosen to the Arizona Cardinals. The top quarterback pick and No. 1 selection overall, however, was Baker Mayfield hails from Lake Travis (Austin, Texas).



After California and Florida, Pennsylvania, led by running back Saquon Barkley of Whitehall (Pa.), the second pick overall, finished with three first-rounders. Seven other states boasted two picks and three had one.

That means, 13 states were represented with first-round picks.

By positions, defensive backs and offensive linemen boasted the most No. 1 picks, with six each, followed by quarterback and defensive linemen with five, linebacker (four), running back (three), wide receiver (two) and tight end (one).
