Preview: Oxford Wolverines vs. Ansonia Chargers
Oxford is 0-8 against Ansonia since September of 2014 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Oxford Wolverines will head out on the road to face off against the Ansonia Chargers at 6:00 p.m. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Oxford comes in on nine and Ansonia on 21.
Last Friday, Oxford earned a 17-6 win over Torrington.
Oxford's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Christopher Bobbie, who rushed for 67 yards and a touchdown, and Matthew Mcguire, who rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown on only eight carries. Mcguire was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 59 yards.
Meanwhile, Ansonia put the finishing touches on their eighth blowout victory of the season on Friday. They took their match on the road with ease, bagging a 49-20 win over Woodland Regional. Given Ansonia's advantage in MaxPreps' Connecticut football rankings (they are ranked 18th, while Woodland Regional is ranked 66th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Oxford pushed their record up to 8-0 with that victory, which was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 0-11 Derby (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 37.5% over those games). As for Ansonia, their win bumped their record up to 8-0.
Oxford was dealt a bruising 56-20 loss at the hands of Ansonia in their previous meeting back in October of 2022. Can Oxford avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
