Basketball Recap: SA Roosevelt Takes a Loss

SA Roosevelt lost against Churchill back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The SA Roosevelt Rough Riders had to suffer through a 71-38 loss at the hands of the Churchill Chargers. While losing is never fun, the Rough Riders can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 831st, while the Chargers are ranked 32nd).

SA Roosevelt's loss came despite strong showings from Maddie Castillo and Kayani Zackary. Castillo posted 16 points and five boards, while Zackary had eight points. Zackary has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last three times she's played.

Even though they lost, SA Roosevelt smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've posted since back in November of 2024.

Alina Hernandez continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Churchill, going 7 for 15 on her way to 23 points in addition to seven rebounds and four steals. Another player making a difference was Rakiya Nelson, who scored nine points.

SA Roosevelt has been struggling recently as they've lost ten of their last 11 matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-22 record this season. As for Churchill, the victory (which was their 14th in a row) raised their record to 27-5.

SA Roosevelt will be playing at home against Clark at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Churchill, they will challenge Reagan at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Churchill's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last five contests.
