Basketball Recap: St. Mary's Finds Playoff Glory Versus Nichols

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but St. Mary had no problem doing just that on Monday. They snuck past the Nichols Vikings with a 53-47 win. This was a revenge game for the Lancers: when they faced off against the Vikings back in January, they had to take a 83-77 defeat.

Several Vikings players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Julieta Cruz, who posted 14 points in addition to six rebounds and six steals. Nichols is 12-3 when Cruz posts five or more steals, but 2-7 otherwise. Evelyn Walcott was another key player, dropping a double-double with 11 points and 14 boards.

St. Mary's has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-7 record this season. This is the second loss in a row for Nichols and nudges their season record down to 14-10.

St. Mary's and Nichols are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. St. Mary's will take on Cardinal O'Hara at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Cardinal O'Hara will roll in looking for their eighth straight victory, something St. Mary's surely won't give up without a fight. As for Nichols, they will square off against Sacred Heart Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Nichols is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53.8 points per game this season.
