By Staff Report Sep 16, 2011, 7:45pm

Gaffney uses big second-half kickoff return and rugged defense to bottle up the Rebels; Baylor stuns Ensworth; Blocked PAT saves Calvert Hall; Union holds on; Lake Oswego goes Long way; DeSoto gains revenge.

Gaffney (S.C.) proved to any remaining doubters that it is the best team in the state of South Carolina by not allowing an offensive touchdown in a 35-13 rout over traditional state power Byrnes (Duncan).

The nation's No. 11 team displayed a stout defense and a balanced offense to record its second win over Byrnes in as many seasons.

Quinshad Davis caught two touchdown passes from quarterback Joey Copeland to help Gaffney race to an early 14-3 lead.

Byrnes recovered a botched Gaffney snap in the end zone for its only touchdown, closing the score to 14-10 at halftime.

Sophomore standout Shaquille Davidson returned the second-half kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to extend Gaffney's lead to 21-10.

Byrnes responded with a field goal, but that was all the Rebels would muster. Touchdown runs by Copeland and sophomore running back Hyleck Foster put the game out of reach.

Gaffney is now undefeated against a rigorous schedule that has featured Dorman and Greenwood in addition to Byrnes.

In a rematch of last season's Division II-AA state final, Baylor (Chattanooga, Tenn.) shocked defending champion Ensworth (Nashville, Tenn.) 42-14.

Quarterback Matthew Oellerich was the story for Baylor. He scored five total touchdowns, outshining Ensworth's highly touted running back, Cornelius Elder.

Earlier in the week, MaxPreps pegged this matchup as a potential upset, as Baylor entered the game with great momentum following a victory over Montgomery Bell Academy.

After Ensworth opened the scoring with a first-quarter touchdown, Oellerich and Baylor rattled off 35 consecutive points. Ensworth would not score again until there were eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

A 40-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown sealed the game for Baylor.

West Virginia-bound Da'Quan Davis blocked an extra point in the final minute helping Calvert Hall (Baltimore) pull out a wild 28-27 win over Red Lion Christian Academy (Bear, Del.) in a battle of East Coast powers.

Trailing 21-7 at halftime, Red Lion thought it had tied it up on a 2-yard run by Wendell Smallwood. But Davis timed his jump perfectly.

“I knew we needed a big play,” Davis told the Baltimore Sun. “It came down to one play and we made it.”

A 35-yard run by C.J. Williams helped Calvert Hall (3-0) run out the clock. Tom Stuart fired three touchdown passes for the winners, coming off a big 18-0 win over DeMatha.

Highly touted freshman quarterback and USC-bound David Sills fired two touchdown passes and was intercepted twice for Red Lion. The first one was returned 10 yards for a touchdown by Will Johnson.

Red Lion took back the lead 7-6 when Sills connected on a 7-yard pass to Daikiel Shorts. That would be the only lead for Red Lion.

Stuart completed TD passes of 7, 34 and 15 yards to Stephen Kelly, Trevor Williams and Kyle Levere, the latter breaking a 21-21 tie in the fourth quarter.

A 70-yard touchdown from Hunter Atyia to Ryan Mischler in the third quarter broke a 14-14 tie, and the Union (Tulsa, Okla.) defense did the rest of the work in a 21-14 victory over Broken Arrow (Okla.).

Union avoided a letdown coming off an impressive win over rival Jenks last week in the Backyard Bowl.

Playing without Kendal Davis, who left Union this weekend after being ruled ineligible by the OHSAA, Union received its opening score from do-it-all running back Kendall Holmes.

Holmes, who rushed for three scores against Jenks last week, scored two more touchdowns tonight to help Union spoil Broken Arrow's upset bid.

It was Holmes' first touchdown that gave Union an early 7-0. Broken Arrow answered when its own star running back, Cameron Wrenn, scored on a 1-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter to even the score.

Then in the third quarter, Broken Arrow took the lead thanks to a 6-yard score from Devin Thomas. However, Holmes and Union responded, executing a 69-yard drive capped off by a 16-yard touchdown run to bring the score to 14-14.

After Mischler's long touchdown gave Union a 21-14 lead in the third quarter, the Redskins' defense buckled down and shut out Broken Arrow the rest of the way.

The senior running back, who transferred in the offseason from Sherwood, exploded for more than 428 yards and seven touchdowns in Lake Oswego's 56-46 victory over Skyline (Sammamish, Wash.), according to the Seattle Times' Mason Kelley.

A 36-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter kicked off Long's big night. He had 207 yards and three touchdowns at the half as Lake Oswego led 28-24. Long continued to pour it on in the second half, with four more scores - three of which were runs longer than 70 yards - as Lake Oswego scored a big out-of-state victory.

Long was a second-team All-State selection in Oregon's Class 5A last season. He led Sherwood to a 13-0 season and rushed for 231 yards and two scores in the state-final win over Marist.

The victory for Lake Oswego avenges a 38-14 loss at the hands of Skyline a year ago. In three games, Lake Oswego has averaged more than 46 points.

DeSoto rolls Stony Point (continue reading){PAGEBREAK}No. 10 DESOTO GAINS REVENGE WITH ROMP OVER STONY POINT
Stony Point drilled DeSoto (Texas) twice last season, 46-29 and 72-48, but that was last season. On Friday, Raheem Wilson fired three touchdown passes and DeSoto overcame a slow start to win 42-7 at Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex.

According to the Austin Statesmen, it was Stony Point's first loss at the complex in six years. The nation's 10th-ranked team turned the tables by dominating in all phases and improving to 4-0 this season.

"We didn't want to talk about last year's loss," Bryson Echols, one of 14 starters who returned to DeSoto this season, told the Statesmen. "We still had that thought in our heads. It was a wonderful feeling."

It wasn't so good following an 82-yard touchdown run by Braizon Fresch that put Stony Point up 7-6 late in the first quarter.

Two touchdown passes from Wilson led to a 22-0 run to give DeSoto a 28-7 halftime lead. From that point, DeSoto romped. DeSoto has now outscored its four opponents 193-23.
