Recap: Sangre de Cristo Thunderbirds vs. Custer County Bobcats
The Sangre de Cristo Thunderbirds won the last time they faced the Custer County Bobcats, and things went their way on Friday too. Sangre de Cristo managed a 42-37 win over Custer County. The win made it back-to-back wins for Sangre de Cristo.
Sangre de Cristo got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Kolby Shellabarger out in front who scored 14 points along with nine rebounds. Kaiden Smit was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with nine rebounds.
Custer County's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Christopher Mullett, who scored 12 points along with nine rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Mullett has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Grant Rusk, who scored nine points along with eight rebounds and seven steals.
Even though they lost, Custer County smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Sangre de Cristo has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season. As for Custer County, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-3.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Sangre de Cristo will take on La Veta at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. That game will pit two of the most dominant against one another: Isiah Rodriguez and Smit. As for Custer County, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Cripple Creek-Victor at 6:00 p.m. on Monday.
