Basketball Game Preview: Pojoaque Valley Elks/Elkettes vs. Taos Tigers

Pojoaque Valley is 2-8 against Taos since April of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Pojoaque Valley Elks/Elkettes will host the Taos Tigers at 6:00 p.m. Pojoaque Valley knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past eight games -- so hopefully Taos likes a good challenge.

If Pojoaque Valley beats Taos with 67 points on Wednesday, it's going to be the team's new lucky number: they've won their past two matchups with that exact score. Pojoaque Valley blew past Los Alamos, posting a 67-30 win. The Elks/Elkettes have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won nine contests by 22 points or more this season.

Pojoaque Valley's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Deondro Lopez led the charge by putting up 14 points. That's the most points Lopez has posted since back in December of 2024. Joziah Salazar was another key player, going 5-for-9 on his way to 10 points and four steals.

Pojoaque Valley smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in five consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Taos suffered their closest loss since January 17th on Friday. They fell just short of Espanola Valley by a score of 71-68. While the Tigers didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Sundevils 19-7 in the first quarter.

Pojoaque Valley has been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 12 matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 19-7 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 64.9 points over those games. Taos' defeat dropped their record down to 14-11.
