Baseball Recap: Hilliard Darby Wins Going Away Against Whetstone

Hilliard Darby had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 13-run drubbing they dealt Whetstone on Thursday. The Panthers put the hurt on the Braves with a sharp 14-1 victory. The win continues a trend for the Panthers in their matchups with the Braves: they've now won three in a row.

Tyler Mullen looked comfortable as he struck out seven batters over 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and not a single walk). That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in April.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Grayson Ranft, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one double, and one RBI. Hilliard Darby is undefeated when Ranft posts two or more runs, but 10-11 otherwise. Cooper Gilkerson was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs and two doubles.

Hilliard Darby's record now sits at 15-11. As for Whetstone, their loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 18-7.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Hilliard Darby will square off against Lancaster at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Golden Gales will roll in looking for their eighth straight victory, something the Panthers surely won't give up without a fight. As for Whetstone, they will challenge Dublin Scioto at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
