Baseball Game Preview: Newark Memorial Cougars vs. Mission San Jose Warriors

The Newark Memorial Cougars are taking a road trip to square off against the Mission San Jose Warriors at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Newark Memorial has six straight victories, Mission San Jose has six straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

If Newark Memorial beats Mission San Jose with four runs on Wednesday, it's going to be the team's new lucky number: they've won their past two games with that exact score. Newark Memorial sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-2 win over Moreau Catholic on Friday.

Noah Hanohano made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Brian Covarrubias Jr, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4. Malosi Gaoteote was another key player, going 1-for-3 with three RBI and one double.

Meanwhile, Mission San Jose lost 9-1 to Irvington on Friday.

Newark Memorial's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-2. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Mission San Jose, their loss dropped their record down to 2-9.

Everything went Newark Memorial's way against Mission San Jose when the teams last played back in March of 2024, as Newark Memorial made off with an 11-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Newark Memorial since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
