Game recap: Edcouch-Elsa High School Football Team beats Mercedes

EDCOUCH, Texas - Edcouch-Elsa (Edcouch, Texas) snapped Mercedes (Texas)'s 6-game winning streak, with a 21-7 victory on Saturday.

The Yellowjackets were up 14-7 at the half after taking the lead on a touchdown run by Mark Garcia in the first quarter.

Edcouch-Elsa expanded its lead to 14 points entering the fourth quarter. EE scored once in the quarter on a Eric Morales touchdown run.

Mathew Guzman made a difference for the Tigers. The senior running back ran for one touchdown. His performance brought his touchdown total to 13 on the year.



Morales was the top performer for the Edcouch school. He ran for two touchdowns.

Mercedes' lone touchdown came on a 16-yard run by Guzman in the second quarter.

The Yellowjackets went into the matchup giving up only 17.1 points per game. The seven points that MHS ended with were well below its average of 27.4 coming into the game.

Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 47-9 win for Edcouch-Elsa.

The loss comes after Mercedes defeated Valley View 33-30 last week. With the win EE extended its winning streak to three games.

Edcouch-Elsa (6-2) goes up against Valley View in a 4A Region IV District 32 game matchup next week, while Mercedes (6-2) locks horns with Roma also in a 4A Region IV District 32 game.
