Basketball Recap: Mesa Picks Up Fifth Straight Win at Home

Mesa had won five straight at home dating back to last season, but on Friday they bumped up to 6-2 to make it six. They came out on top against the McClintock Chargers by a score of 72-59. Given the Jackrabbits' advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 13th, while the Chargers are ranked 161st) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Mesa to victory, but perhaps none more so than Daijon Grayson, who shot 75% from the field to rack up 20 points and six rebounds. The last time Grayson's field goal percentage was this high was back in January. The team also got some help courtesy of Jakyi Miles, who posted 21 points along with five assists and five boards.

As for McClintock, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-6 record this season. Those defeats can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 68.3 points over those games.

Several Chargers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Josh McManaway, who went 8-for-18 en route to 25 points and five rebounds. McManaway continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Kyler Frye, who shot 50% from the field on his way to 16 points and six assists.

Mesa and McClintock will both get a bit of extra prep time before their next matchups. The next time the Jackrabbits see the court they'll take on Crossroads at 3:30 p.m. on the 26th. As for McClintock, their break will end when they face Central at 7:00 p.m. on January 8, 2026.
